North of England Festival

“Fruits of the Earth, Fruits of the Spirit”

Directed by Jeremy Suter

Master of Music Carlisle Cathedral

On May 12th members of St Paul's choir joined over 200 other choristers from the northern region for an area festival at Hexham Abbey.

One of the choristers, Mavis McMahon,  wrote about the experience and some of the music for the parish magazine.

"The music was a complete joy. Familiar hymns were sung with feeling and competence all to the praise of creation.

Psalm 100 - music by Lucien Deiss was a delight.

The Canticle - Benedicite in G by Francis Jackson - tested our competence but was exciting and dramatic.

The Spirit of the Lord by Edward Elgar was quite lovely, and so stimulating.

Saranam - a punjabi melody arranged by Geoff Weaver - was the sung respnse to the prayers - and painted the perfect picture.

The Rector, The Revd Canon Graham Usher spoke about his experiences whilst living with the people in the rain forests of Brazil and expressed concern about conservation of precious resources.

Finally there was the Presentation of Symbols - vegetables nuts and fruit - water - music - a bible - a large cross - grain and wine.

The final procession was sobering - to think that we had taken part in such a memorable service was an honour for us."
